I have always loved the look of the Mauser c96 series of pistols. Something about them just appeals to me, so when I found this airsoft knockoff at a flea market the other day I couldn't help but pick it up.

Upon opening I discovered it to be coated in a thick layer of black paint. It looked okay but I thought I could do better, and so began the process of completely reworking the exterior of the gun.

I started by stripping off all of the black paint using Citristrip paint stripper and a scratch pad, which took me around 4 hours of work to do. That paint was tough as nails and it was no easy task getting it off.

Once the paint was completely removed, I began applying coat after coat of GunKote cold blue metal finishing compound, polishing each layer after it was applied until I got the finish I wanted. After that I burnished and polished it with some steel wool, and it came out looking like this.

I will probably reblue the frame yet again to match the darkness of the magazine, but so far I am very pleased with it. Next up is carving some real wooden grips!

nicely done, I have a C-96 (that was made in 1928) and your bluing there almost matches the coloring, never really been a big fan of Airsoft but didn't know they made real looking guns (and not just that modern plastic is better stuff)

Thanks much. I have always wanted a real one but couldn't swing the price, so this was the closest I could get.

looks nice, have yet to get to see one of the ones with the detachable magazine. When i got mine it was firmly in the category of "too good to be true" priced come to find out it is one that has visited china and, had the bejeezus shot out of it but still totally worth it

I also like the look of the new finish on the Bolo Mauser.
However, my thinking is why don't you do the same finish on the magazine it gives it a more used appearance. If you try a local gunshow (oops did I say that out loud) you might be able to pick up a used pair and modify them to fit.
Just my .02

Well done!
